The Lakes and Dales Loop
See the best of Cumbria by bike
The Lakes and Dales Loop is a brand new waymarked cycle route in Cumbria and, believe us, it’s a special one! The 196-mile circuit takes in the beautiful Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, Morecambe Bay, Lune Valley, the Orton Fells and Eden Valley and offers cyclists a huge range of landscapes including picturesque rivers, wild coastline and views of England’s highest mountains. This is the best way to experience the fabulous natural scenery, culture and food in the most beautiful corner of the UK and the route is certain to rival the Coast to Coast and other long distances routes in the UK.
The Loop officially starts and finishes in Penrith and is entirely on quiet lanes, passing through the hospitable towns of Cockermouth, Broughton-in-Furness, Grange-Over-Sands, Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh, as well as countless idyllic villages and hamlets nestled in the valleys.
Lakes and Dales Loop Terrain
The Loop takes a tour around the high ground of the Lake District, so there are no long, drawn out climbs to compare with the infamous Hardknott, Wrynose and Honister passes, but there is a total of around 5000 metres of climbing to tackle. The route does undulate and there are lots of short and occasionally steep climbs mixed in with some more gentle gradients, as well as rewarding downhill sections. The highest point on the route at 343m is located between Greystoke and Hesket Newmarket.

Which bike to bring?
The Lakes and Dales Loop is entirely on roads, so a road bike, touring bike or hybrid is suitable for this trip. The quality of Cumbrian road surfaces does vary, so tyres with a width of at least 25mm are recommended. If you’re intending on riding on a mountain bike (not particularly recommended for the long miles on the road!), slick or semi-slick tyres are recommended as opposed to fat, knobbly tyres. You’ll need to ensure that your own bike is in good working order – ideally serviced by a qualified mechanic before the ride – and you have sufficient spare parts with you on the ride.
We can provide you with one of our hybrid bikes so you don’t have to worry about transporting yours to and from the route. You will be provided with a Ridgeback Meteor hybrid bike, with a frame size that suits your height. The bikes have 21 gears and smooth-rolling 700c wheels and are perfect for the route. The bikes are fitted with a bottle cage and come with a pannier bag, spare innertube and tyre levers, pump and bike lock. If you wish to bring your own saddle and pedals these can be fitted to the bikes for you.
This is a self-guided trip and you’ll be provided with maps and detailed turn-by-turn route notes. We can also email you the GPS files if you’d like to download the route to your navigation device. We can also provide you with a GPS navigation device with the routes pre-loaded with turn-by-turn directions for an additional £25.
Your main luggage will be transferred each day from your start to end accommodation, leaving you free to ride carrying only your supplies for the day. Please ensure that your main luggage is limited to 1 bag and does not exceed 15kg in weight.
